5. Athens of Finland

The University of Jyväskylä originated from the first teacher training seminar in Finland, established in 1863 by Uno Cygnaeus. Cygnaeus's legacy is particularly evident in the university's education program, which has been a pioneer in developing Finnish-language teacher education. Cygnaeus was among the first to emphasize the importance of professional teacher training and its significance for the educational system. His ideas were based on the belief that high-quality teacher training is crucial for the enlightenment and advancement of the nation. The Seminaarinmäki campus, which was the first in Finland to receive the European Heritage Label, highlights the importance of the Finnish and European school systems as the foundation of an equitable and democratic society. The campus showcases the entire development history of the university, from the buildings of the late 19th century and the botanical garden to the beautifully renovated library designed by architect Ari Sipinen.
